If you are buying produce at the store, there is a simple way to know whether or not it is genetically modified, conventional, or organic. Simply check out the photo below to see how.
The Potential Hazard of Consuming GMOs
A number of studies have produced results showing adverse effects of consuming GMOs. Allergic reactions, liver toxicity, reproductive issues, sterility, and infant mortality are a few of the potential side-effects of consuming GMOs (2).
The Best Way to Avoid GMOs
The best way to avoid GMOs is to grow your own food or get it from a trustworthy, local source. Several seed companies including High Mowing Organic Seeds, Johnny’s Seeds, and Seed Saver’s Exchange Iowa sell high quality, non-GMO seeds. Local Harvest is a great resource for finding farmer’s markets and cooperatives in your area which have non-GMO foods. If you live in South Florida, a complete list of local food sources can be found by clicking here.
The Non-Gmo Project is a great resource for learning more about the genetic modification of foods.
